Flynn Battaglia Architects has recently completed a $15 million renovation project of the Physical and Health Sciences Building at SUNY Alfred State College of Technology. Today, that building received official word of its certification at the LEED Gold level for its integration of green technology throughout the project. In keeping with Alfred State College’s vision of being at the forefront of technology and inspiring its students to pursue careers in the new Green economy, this completely rehabilitated building has become a model for green design in the Southern Tier. Associate Principal and Project Architect Mark Wendel led the project, working with engineering firm Pathfinder Engineers.
Many green elements were integrated into various aspects of the project.
The engineering systems have been designed to provide energy savings of over 47% compared to a typical new building.
The building is projected to produce 2.42% of its electric energy using on-site solar collectors.
The project reduces potable water use by 35% compared to a typical new building.
Over 30% of the materials installed during construction were sourced from within 500 miles of the project site and over 18% of the materials contain recycled content.
Over 93% of construction waste was recycled, not landfilled, representing over 600 tons of material that was not sent to landfills.
Over 95% of the exterior walls and structure were reused as part of the renovation, which kept many more tons of material from being discarded and sent to landfills.
