Ronald Battaglia and Christopher Less attend National AIA Convention in Chicago

Partner Ronald Battaglia, FAIA and Senior Design Architect Christopher Less, AIA recently attended the national American Institute of Architects (AIA) Convention, held this year in Chicago, Ill.  Here are some thoughts from Chris about his experience:

The theme of the convention was “Design with Purpose” highlighting the engagement of architects in their communities. Having Rahm Emmanuel, Theaster Gates and Jeanne Gang speak on the first day was an inspiring and interesting mix of government, a community activist / artist, and an architect working to change paradigms.

Highlights:

The mayor of Chicago announced they will be instituting a Biennial Exhibit similar to Venice, starting next year.

Transformation of the Chicago Island from an airport to a park by Jeanne Gang and her Baltimore aquarium work has led to some intense research on oceans.

Russ Davidson, FAIA from New York State became the AIA National President Elect. He will be only the second national president from NYS in the last 20 years.

Tony Hsieh from Zappos is transforming the Las Vegas downtown through co-learning and community building. His goal: “When you come to Las Vegas, you leave smarter”. (Not a statement you would associate with Vegas normally!)

AIA Gold Medal went to Julia Morgan, FAIA posthumously in a very emotional but focused presentation.  Julia Morgan is the first woman ever to receive the AIA Gold Medal. Between 1904 and 1950, Morgan designed over 700 buildings.

AIA National revised its Board structure, reducing the board from over 50 members to 16, creating a much more focused and engaged group.

Eskew + Dumez + Ripple won the Firm Award.  Not only did the partners come to receive the award, but they brought their entire office as well!    Here is a video of their firm’s work.  Congratulations!
