Drake Memorial Library Plaza
SUNY Brockport
Completed 2015
The plaza connecting the Allen Administration building to Drake Memorial Library at SUNY Brockport was originally constructed in the 1970s. The masonry and concrete of the existing structure were in dire need of repair, as it has been actively leaking into the lower level interior for numerous years. The project scope included replacing the deck system, repairing various areas of masonry and cast concrete, creating better access to the plaza, and creating a more identifiable entrance to the library. At the outset of the Design Phase, Flynn Battaglia Architects completed a study to investigate the possibility of adding a green roof as well as a series of intimate public spaces. The study included a wind analysis to assist in locating and creating seating areas. The final design included installation of a new waterproof membrane and concrete pavers as well as vegetated roof tiles, windscreens and lighting were added to the plaza. With new benches, and vegetation and windscreens, this plaza is now an attractive public space on campus for students.
