The 67' tall center dome and entry portico of this circa 1900 National
Register conservatory has undergone a complete restoration to preserve the
1930s-era structural system and wood window walls. An innovative safety
glazing system has been introduced that preserves the original character
of the space while upgrading the overhead glazing to modern standards. Lost
elements, such as the finial capping the dome, were researched and recreated.
Previously misinterpreted elements, such as the pediment of the entry portico,
were rebuilt to more closely match the original configurations.
BECBG Master Plan set forth a logical, realizable plan for future development
of this cultural treasure. Working with the Gardens staff & volunteers,
and Botanical Society Board of Directors, we developed a plan that addresses
long term restoration and maintenance of each of the historic glass houses,
new engaging exhibits, a significant new rear addition to allow the facility
to hold major private and community events, and the addition of a new west
garden that would pay homage to the originally planned Olmsted garden for
the site. We also worked to carefully craft a realistic plan to fund and
construct all of the $20 million worth of improvements over time.
